GCFA Board Summer Meeting

Nashville, TN – The Board of Directors of the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) held its summer meeting in Nashville, July 16, 2015. During the one day meeting, the board heard reports of the work of the internal departments of GCFA.

All departments were commended for their work. Particular interest was paid to the Shared Services and Sponsorship Departments. Shared Services reported to the board the work of many departments working together to develop the Joyfully2UMC app that was recently relaunched. The free app, developed by GCFA’s IT department, is available on Android® and Apple® devices and provides United Methodist church members the opportunity to donate to their home or a visiting church that uses the Vanco funds processing program. Additionally, Shared Services showed the board the new UMCMarket.org. Relaunched on July 13, UMCMarket.org allows church members who shop online to choose from hundreds of retailers and generate micro-donations to their ministry of choice. In his remarks, Moses Kumar, chief executive of GCFA stated, “our vision at GCFA is to be a leading, trusted administrative resource for The United Methodist Church. Through our Shared Services model, we interact with the Church in a number of ways”.

The Board heard the report of the Sponsorship Department of GCFA. The goal of Sponsorship is to solicit and raise funds for financial support of the General Conference. Efforts have been underway since the last General Conference to reach a goal of $695,000 to help underwrite the cost of the quadrennial event. Over $200,000 was raised to support the 2012 General Conference. To date, over $625,000 has been received or pledged. The board thanked the team for their work and was encouraged that this financial support is being deployed.

Bari Beasley, Chief Officer of Shared Services and Marketing said, “We are very encouraged by the response from our board to the accomplishments of the Sponsorship and Shared Services Departments. We are blessed with the work of all the staff of GCFA and look forward to a great year in ministry together.”

In preparation for General Conference, the board approved the reports of GCFA to be included in the Advanced Daily Christian Advocate (ADCA), to be translated and made available in several formats to delegates to the General Conference. In addition, the board reviewed GCFA petitions to the General Conference on proposed revisions to various paragraphs of the Book of Discipline.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for November, 2015.

The General Council on Finance and Administration coordinates and administers financial resources, safeguards the legal interests and rights of the Church, and provides administrative resources to enable the fulfillment of the mission of The United Methodist Church.
