UMI Board Reports Gains and Elects Plesko as President and CEO
Nashville, TN – At the March 2017 meeting of the Board of Directors of United Methodist Insurance (UMI), the Board received information on the progress UMI is making in protecting the people and property of The United Methodist Church. UMI is a ministry of the United Methodist Church and provides vital coverage in compliance with the directives of the 2016 General Conference for local churches regarding adequate insurance coverage.
UMI now insures more than 3,000 local churches and other church properties and has a presence in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Citing that uninsured and under-insured losses deplete church resources, UMI has positioned itself to improve insurance coverage for persons and property of the Church. UMI has retained more than 97% of its customers and increased the number of ministries protected by superior coverage by more than 42% in each of the last three years. UMI increased its gross written premiums by over 200% since 2013. By 2020, UMI expects to insure more than 5,500 United Methodist ministries.
In other actions, the Board reaffirmed Mike Plesko as President and Chief Executive Officer. Plesko, who has served as interim president, will assume the full-time responsibilities immediately and said, “I am honored by the confidence expressed by the UMI board in allowing me to continue to serve the Church in this role.” Plesko brings years of experience as an insurance underwriter and consultant. The Board, in reaffirming his role, will have in place a person who has helped UMI grow in the past year.
David Hughes, Chair of the Board of Directors said, “We are very pleased to announce that Mike Plesko has accepted the position of President and CEO of United Methodist Insurance. We are very fortunate to have a leader that not only has strong technical skills, but also has a true passion for this ministry of the church.”
